"You who enter here, give up any hope"

A second LP from Micro_Penis on doubtfulsounds, 2 years after the noteworthy first one. A second disc that nearly didn't come out as two members spent long stays in the mental hospitals, so the band couldn't record sessions. In addition to the heavy medication, those two members undertook therapeutic workshop with the artist Anne Zimmerman, where they expressed themselves. K. and S. revealed themselves through sculpture, using rubbish, and in particular vegetable peelings and stuff found in the hospital garbage bins. They made up several creatures, hybridization of sexual obsession and vegetable shape. Anne Zimmerman proposed to develop some of their work with rubber. Every copy of the "Tolvek" record (alsatian word for "moron") comes with one of them.

Despite the repeated hospitalisations of K. and S. and the year-long meditative retreats in a Zen temple in the south of Italy of H. and O., the rare recording sessions which comprise this new album are the moments where the inner demons have got the upper hand over the fragile mental health of each member, transformed each time into an outlet, or, exorcism.

Here is the sonic documentation of this.

For horror movie, art brut, cruelty and cavalry lovers.

Black vinyl and pro-printed cover, comes with a sexual rubber beast. Artwork by Michel Borgo. Mastering by Aigle noir. Limited to 300 copies.

reviews

Vital Weekly 802

Back in Vital Weekly 696 I reviewed the first LP by Micro_Penis, a quartet from Mulhouse, France and casted my suspicion on the fact that some of the information on the band might not be true. The gap between that first unnamed record and this second is quite long, since two members spend 'long stays in mental hospitals' 'revealing themselves through sculpture, using rubbish, and in particular vegetable peelings and stuff found in the hospital garbage bins'. They ended up with some rubber beats that every LP has (not mine actually). Two other members spend time in a 'Zen temple in the south of Italy', so the band had just a few rare sessions. There is still no listing of instruments, but again the voice is quite important. Still clueless what those 'lyrics' are supposed to be about, if anything at all. Maybe its some general purge. There is also trumpet, saxophone, electronics and maybe acoustic objects thrown about. However 'crazy' this all is, I think Micro_Penis has progressed from their first record quite a bit, with some interesting more thoughtful pieces and not as loud throughout as on the first album. Very much something for those who like anything from the Schimpfluch label, outsider music and art brut, even when it turns out, one day, that all of this was fake. Quite nice, especially the second side made a fine impression. (FdW)

Pleebs 'n Pikers will no doubt piddle they's panties in infantile glee at the merest gaze upon this outfit's name. And in all honesty, that's okay. Whatever lures'em. I mean, just take a gander at the cover art. It would seem "all are welcome" is the mantra here. Besides, w/a name like Micro Penis, they's really got nothin to shy away from. 'Tolvek' is the 2nd release of brut flatulence from these canard gobblers. On it they's have journeyed past the feral channelin of Cromagnon & function as full on necromancers, conjurin up aural apparitions of Nihilist Spasm Band, MEV, Furious Pig, Comus & even the lost trumpet've Alan Shorter, mostly all at once. My copy came w/a rubber cabbage "conductor" not dissimilar to the one's brought to Earth by Hank Bain in the excellent SCTV episode known as 'Zontar'. Does this prove mankind is doomed? Buy it 'n find out. Edition of 300.

Still Single

I don’t think I’ve ever laughed as hard opening my mail as I did the day this record arrived. Once you see a copy in the buff (and if you think dick jokes are as funny as I do), you care gonna lose it. The music therein on Micro_Penis’s second full-length is just about as rude and esoteric, the sound of four people – a few of which had been hospitalized prior to recording this record, so sayeth the promo spiel – letting go in humorous fashion, with slowed down vocal samples, confused saxophone, and organic/unstable moments amid the synth torture. If the statement about their condition is true, I hope they’re OK; if making a noise/improvisational fart like this (or early Boredoms) is grounds to get you a nice, long stay in a facility somewhere, perhaps we’d all best remain on our toes. Tolvek is Alsatian dialect for “moron,” and I’m part Alsatian, so maybe it’s time I did some heritage studies and recognized what other harsh words exist in my father tongue. 300 copies which come with some sort of “sexual rubber beast” toy; don’t buy one if it doesn’t include this little flexible wonder.

Superb absurdist sounds from France. Yeah, you’re going to play this once just for the back announce, but you’ll come back for the out-there oddity found on these short blasts of trick-door percussion, occasional crumpled trumpet and plenty of feral vocalizations. Cheery noise bits are peppered in as well. What is the source of all this? Torment? Anger? Baguette prices? Perhaps the band name itself, summoning up a Napoleonic response? I don’t know, this is not even on Bimbo Tower, but it is just peculiar in the right way. With enough breathing room for those not wanting to be blitzed. Still Un-tamed, and fluxus friendly for the old folks freak home. Perhaps in translation the “lyrics” probe man’s psyche, but I think the probing is mostly meant for a spot lower and a shade even darker. If you were to play *just one* release that shipped with an artificial latex lettuce leaf, please let this be that release. Thurston Hunger
